St. Luke's and La Casa De La Paz Retreat Center are located just outside Canutillo, Texas, 1/4 mile west on McNutt Road (Hwy 273) past Westside Drive. St. Luke's is really not in El Paso . In fact, it isn't even in Texas . It's across the line three hundred yards into New Mexico . But who knows where La Union is? That's where the Diocese of the Rio Grande says St. Luke's is. But it isn't. La Union is the closest town in New Mexico , all right, but it is four miles up the road. Canutillo is two miles closer, but it is in Texas . The closest New Mexican town with a Post Office is Anthony and that is where the church gets its mail (Ed. - it now gets delivered to the church). But the telephone exchange is in El Paso . And El Paso is where 75 percent of the congregation lives. So all-in-all, I have never worried much about taking license with St. Luke's location. And if then I am indeed morally culpable, I confess that I would rather suffer reprobation as a lair than the frustration of trying to explain the demographics of the Mesilla Valley and the tortuous course the State boundary takes down there.
